Getting Teeth, Eyes and Ears Covered

Ask people what surprised them most about Medicare, and many will say it does not pay for their teeth, glasses or hearing aids. These are not luxuries. Untreated dental problems, poor vision and hearing loss all affect health, safety and independence as we age.

Original Medicare covers very little routine care in these areas. There are other ways to get it, and the right one depends on how much care you expect to need.

What Original Medicare Pays For

Medicare covers some services related to these areas when they are medically necessary: certain dental care tied to a covered medical procedure, an eye exam for diabetic retinopathy or glaucoma screening for people at risk, one pair of glasses after cataract surgery with an implanted lens, and diagnostic hearing exams ordered by a doctor.

It does not cover routine cleanings, fillings, dentures, standard eye exams for glasses, or hearing aids.

Extras Inside Part C Plans

Plenty of Part C plans build in some teeth, eye and ear benefits. These vary widely. One plan may cover two cleanings and a small yearly allowance for major work; another may offer a larger allowance through a specific dental network.

  • Annual dollar limits on dental work
  • Network rules for dentists and eye doctors
  • Waiting periods before major services
  • Allowance amounts for frames, lenses or hearing aids

We read these details for each plan so you know what a crown, a pair of bifocals or two hearing aids would really cost.

Other Options

If you stay with Original Medicare, a separate dental policy, a vision plan, a discount membership or simply paying cash are all possibilities. Over-the-counter hearing aids for mild to moderate loss have been available in stores since 2022 and cost much less than many prescription models.

Residents with NJ FamilyCare may have dental and vision benefits through that program, and D-SNPs often add more.

Irvington Questions About Dental, Vision and Hearing

Is there a plan that covers implants?

Some plans offer allowances that can go toward implants, but limits are often lower than the full cost. We check actual allowances.

Will my dentist be covered?

That comes down to the dental network each plan uses. We search for your dentist by name.

Are hearing aids covered under Medicare Advantage?

Many plans include a hearing aid allowance or discount, sometimes through a specific vendor.

Should I buy dental coverage if my teeth are healthy?

A plan with preventive cleanings can still be worthwhile. We compare the premium with what you would pay out of pocket.
