Is a Supplement Worth It for an Irvington Retiree?

Original Medicare has a big advantage: you may visit any U.S. physician or hospital participating in Medicare, no network and no referrals. Its weak spot is the bill that follows. After Medicare pays its share, a patient is usually left holding deductibles and a percentage of nearly every service, with no yearly limit.

A Medigap policy is private insurance built to pick up those leftovers. You pay the company a monthly premium, and depending on the plan letter, it covers part or almost all of what Medicare does not.

We help Irvington residents answer two questions. First, does paying a steady premium make more sense for you than a lower-cost plan with copays? Second, if it does, which letter and which carrier offer the best value among the companies we work with?

Where the Gaps Show Up

Picture three nights at Newark Beth Israel after a heart scare. In 2026, Part A alone asks you for $1,736 at the start of that benefit period. Once you are home, the cardiology follow-ups, echocardiograms and cardiac rehab are Part B services, and after the $283 annual deductible you generally owe one fifth of each approved amount.

That one-fifth share never caps out under Original Medicare. A year with a joint replacement or cancer treatment can leave a five-figure balance. Supplements turn that open question into a known monthly cost.

  • The hospital deductible and the coinsurance for very long inpatient stays
  • The 20 percent you would otherwise owe under Part B
  • Coinsurance at a skilled nursing facility on most letters
  • Emergency treatment overseas on several letters, useful for long visits to Haiti, Jamaica or Latin America

Why Plan G Is Plan G Everywhere

The benefits behind each Medigap letter are set by law. A Plan G bought from one carrier pays exactly what Plan G pays from any other carrier in New Jersey. What changes between companies is the premium, how sharply that premium has climbed over time and how easy the company is to deal with.

For people new to Medicare, Plan G is a frequent choice because the only gap it leaves is the Part B deductible. Plan N usually costs less per month but asks for small copays at certain doctor and ER visits. If your Medicare eligibility began in 2020 or later, Plans C and F are off the table.

Because the benefits match, our comparison centers on price, rate history and the service record of the insurers we represent.

The Six Months That Matter Most

Medigap timing deserves special attention. A one-time, six-month Medigap Open Enrollment Period starts in the month when you are both at least 65 and covered by Part B. Throughout those months, carriers must accept you at their standard rates no matter what conditions you have.

Once those months pass, an application may involve health questions and possible rejection, except in specific situations protected by federal rules. So if you are still working at 65 and delaying Part B, the window waits for you. We help you plan the start date so you do not lose that protection by accident.

Drugs Are a Separate Purchase

A supplement does not include prescription benefits. Most people who choose Medigap also join a stand-alone drug plan, which in 2026 limits covered out-of-pocket drug spending to $2,100 for the year. Comparison tips live in our drug plan guide.

If you are trying to decide between this route and an all-in-one plan, read our Medicare Advantage page next to this one. The right answer depends on your health, your budget and how much you value choosing any provider.

Talk It Over at No Charge

Have your medication list and your doctors' names handy. We set your current coverage beside the options we carry and show what changes in dollars and in access to care. Most calls finish in about half an hour, nobody asks you to commit on the spot, and you can learn about our agency beforehand.

Irvington Questions About Medigap

Can I buy a Medigap policy whenever I want?

You can apply at any time, but outside your six-month guaranteed window or another protected situation, an insurer may review your health and refuse coverage. Timing your purchase carefully matters.

Will a supplement work at hospitals in New York?

Yes. A supplement rides along with Original Medicare, so wherever Medicare is taken nationwide, it pays too, including hospitals across the river.

Do premiums go up over time?

They can. Carriers raise rates for many reasons, including age and claim costs. We share what we know about each company's increase history before you pick one.

Does Medigap cover dental work or glasses?

No. Routine dental, vision and hearing care are outside Medigap. Our dental, vision and hearing page describes other ways to get them covered.

Can I hold Medigap and Medicare Advantage at once?

No. A supplement only pays alongside Original Medicare. If you join a Part C plan, the supplement would not pay anything.
